he gardens at Hawthorn Villa are listed by the National Estate and were originally established in the 1870's by the Monds family.
Today the "Stables" accommodation is surrounded by the 2 acres of parklike gardens. Without doubt the centrepiece is the grove of magnificent sequoias that tower over the property. They were planted by the Monds family as far back as the 1870's. Family photos from the 1890's clearly shows these trees well established in the background.
Indeed guests will find a number of important trees and plants on the estate.
Hawthorn Villa also boasts a huge English Laurel tree. The front of this tree was very popular in the Victorian times for making jam and pies.
Guests lucky enough to be staying at the "Stables" late Summer to Autumn are welcome to eat apples from either of the two large apple trees - grannysmith and braeburn.
The current owners are keen to extend the exciting gardens and indeed a number of hedges have been recently planted to increase the private atmosphere that guests currently enjoy.
The large croquet lawn in front of the villa is much the same today as it was 100 years ago.
A wide range of bulbs that are planted on the estate allow for constant show of colour and include tulips, daffodils, jonquils, belladonna lilies, hollyhocks, liliums and poppies.
Undoubtly the rarest bulb would be the Brunsvigia Josephina which when in flower (only every second year) has the most incredible show.
Guests love nothing better than to relax in beautiful surroundings, perhaps with some wine and cheese, read a book or play an enjoyable game of bocce - at the "Stables" you can do all these things and more.
